Two access points on the same channel within earshot of each other don't add capacity β they take turns, halving each other's airtime. Worse, two APs on overlapping channels (say 1 and 3 on 2.4 GHz) interfere as raw noise, which is worse than sharing. Good design assigns non-overlapping channels so neighbouring APs never collide, reusing each channel only where cells are far enough apart not to hear each other.
The rules that never change
- 2.4 GHz: only 1, 6 and 11. Three channels, forever. Never use 40 MHz here.
- 5 GHz: go wide carefully. 80 MHz channels are fast but you only get a handful β in a dense deployment, 40 MHz or even 20 MHz gives you more channels to reuse cleanly.
- 6 GHz is the escape hatch. WiFi 6E/7 opens far more spectrum, so wide channels stop being a scarcity problem β if your APs and clients support it.

Which 2.4 GHz channels don't overlap?
Only 1, 6 and 11 in North America. Everything else overlaps.
How many non-overlapping 5 GHz channels?
Up to ~24 at 20 MHz (with DFS). 40 MHz halves it, 80 MHz quarters it, 160 MHz leaves two.
40 MHz on 2.4 GHz?
Never β there's only room for three 20 MHz channels. 40 MHz guarantees interference. Keep 2.4 at 20 MHz.
