Convert the IT load to heat (watts × 3.412 = BTU/hr), add the room envelope (~10 BTU per sq ft), people (~400 BTU each) and lighting, then add ~20% headroom. A closet with 1,500W of equipment typically needs a 9,000–12,000 BTU (0.75–1 ton) unit.

Can a server room use a regular home mini-split?

Use a unit rated for year-round cooling — server rooms need cooling in January too, and many comfort units can't run in cold outdoor temperatures without a low-ambient kit. Also plan condensate drainage and, for critical rooms, a second (N+1) unit.

How hot is too hot for a server room?

ASHRAE's recommended envelope for IT equipment tops out at 27°C (80.6°F) inlet temperature. Above that, equipment fans ramp, drives age faster, and thermal shutdowns get close. Design for low 20s with the cooling running.
