What is a rack unit (RU or U)?

A rack unit is 1.75 inches (44.45 mm) of vertical space in a standard 19-inch rack. Equipment heights are specified in multiples: a typical switch is 1U, an NVR 1–2U, a UPS 2U. Rack sizes run from 6U wall cabinets to 42–45U floor racks.

How much free space should I leave in an equipment rack?

Plan 25–30% free space on a new install: room for growth, cable management, and airflow. A design that fills the rack on day one guarantees a rack replacement (or an ugly second rack) at the first expansion.

How do I convert equipment watts to cooling BTU?

Multiply watts by 3.412 to get BTU per hour — essentially every watt consumed becomes heat. A rack drawing 800W dumps about 2,730 BTU/hr into the room, which a closet without ventilation cannot dissipate.

Three rules that save service calls

Heavy at the bottom. UPS and batteries go in the lowest RUs — for stability and because sliding a 60 lb UPS in at chest height is how backs and gear get hurt.
1U of cable management per patch panel. A rack without horizontal managers looks fine on day one and becomes unserviceable by year two.
Check the circuit, not just the rack. A 15A/120V circuit sustains about 1,440W (80% rule). PoE switches loaded with cameras get there faster than you'd think.
