Camera counts come from two separate lists that get added together. Choke points are non-negotiable: every entrance, till, safe and loading door gets its own camera at identification quality, because those are the places every incident passes through. Area coverage then fills in between at observation quality โ roughly one camera per 600โ1,200 sq ft indoors depending on how open the space is, and far less densely outdoors.
This is why a "cameras per square foot" answer alone is always wrong: a 1,500 sq ft store with two entrances, three tills and a stockroom door needs more cameras than a 3,000 sq ft open showroom with one door.
Frequently asked questions
How many cameras for a small retail store?
Typically 6โ10 for ~2,000 sq ft: entrances, POS, aisles, stockroom and rear exit.
Which areas must always be covered?
Entrances/exits, POS, cash/safe areas, loading docks and parking approaches โ the choke points every person passes through.
Fewer 4K cameras or more standard ones?
A mix โ resolution widens area coverage but doors still need a dedicated camera each for identification.
