Alarm and access control standards don't just require standby batteries โ they require the system to recharge them within a set window (commonly 24โ72 hours depending on the standard). A panel whose charging circuit can't refill its battery in time is non-compliant even though it works fine day to day. This bites when someone installs a bigger battery for longer standby: an 18 Ah battery on a 350 mA panel charger takes over two days to recover from a deep discharge.
Frequently asked questions
How long to recharge a 12V 7Ah alarm battery?
Roughly 18โ24 hours from flat on a typical panel's 350โ500 mA charger.
Can I charge SLA faster with a bigger charger?
Only to ~C/4. Beyond that the battery overheats and gasses, permanently losing capacity. LiFePO4 tolerates 0.5Cโ1C.
Why is the last 20% so slow?
Absorption phase โ the battery accepts less current as it approaches full. Bulk gets you to ~80% fast; full takes about twice as long.
