How speaker coverage is calculated

A ceiling speaker projects a cone of sound. Its useful coverage radius at ear height is (ceiling height − ear height) × tan(dispersion ÷ 2). With 9 ft ceilings, seated listeners and a 90° speaker, that's a 5 ft radius — a 10 ft circle. The coverage pattern then sets how much circles overlap: edge-to-edge for background music, ~1.4× radius spacing for reliable speech intelligibility, and 1× radius for premium consistency.

Design notes from the field

High ceilings need narrow dispersion. Above ~14 ft, wide-dispersion speakers spray the walls before reaching ears. Use 60° speakers or pendants.
Paging needs overlap. Gaps that are fine for music make announcements unintelligible exactly where someone is standing.
Keep 70V tap totals under 80% of amp power. Count every speaker at its tap wattage, not its rated maximum.
