Fiber Loss Budget Calculator
Total up the optical loss on a fiber link โ fiber, connectors, splices, margin โ and check it against the transceiver's power budget before anyone pulls cable between buildings.
Link details
Each mated LC/SC pair โ 0.5 dB (TIA max 0.75).
Typical values โ always confirm on the optic's datasheet.

Loss budgets on paper almost always pass โ campus links are short and modern optics are generous. Real failures come from three places: dirty connectors (a single contaminated ferrule adds 1โ5 dB; clean and inspect every mating), modal bandwidth on multimode (distance limits that no loss budget can buy back), and tight bends in trays and slack loops. If a link that should pass doesn't, an inspection scope and a one-jumper reference test find the problem faster than re-terminating everything.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a loss budget?
Fiber (dB/km ร km) + connector pairs (~0.5 dB each) + splices (~0.1 dB each) + 3 dB margin, compared against the optic pair's power budget.
Singlemode vs multimode loss?
OS2: ~0.35 dB/km @1310, ~0.25 @1550. OM3/OM4 @850: ~3 dB/km.
Budget passes but the link fails โ why?
Modal bandwidth limits on multimode (300/400 m for 10G-SR on OM3/OM4) or dirty connectors. Inspect and clean first.
