Loss budgets on paper almost always pass โ€” campus links are short and modern optics are generous. Real failures come from three places: dirty connectors (a single contaminated ferrule adds 1โ€“5 dB; clean and inspect every mating), modal bandwidth on multimode (distance limits that no loss budget can buy back), and tight bends in trays and slack loops. If a link that should pass doesn't, an inspection scope and a one-jumper reference test find the problem faster than re-terminating everything.
